In 1931, Shute married Frances Mary Heaton and in the same year founded an aircraft construction company, Airspeed Ltd., which became a major airplane manufacturer in Britain by the end of the decade. Nevil Shute (1899-1960) was an English novelist and aeronautical engineer who served in the British military in both world wars and spent his later years in Australia.

Nevil Shute wrote the first SEAFARER manuscript sometime around 1946-47. He thought enough of his first effort to rewrite the entire manuscript shortly thereafter. However, he apparently did not think either was worthy of publication. In 1948, he rewrote the story as BLIND UNDERSTANDING, another tale of the after effects of war.
